Anti-Virus software is vital to help keep both University computers and your own personal computer secure. Sophos Anti-Virus software is the UW’s preferred choice for UW faculty, staff and students. The Sophos product suite includes stand-alone and managed anti-virus clients for all current (and many older) versions of Windows and Mac OS, and most of the popular UNIX and Linux distributions. It also provides apps for both Android and iOS based mobile devices.

Sophos Anti-Virus protection is available to UW faculty, staff, students and departments. Which version of Sophos you download depends on the ownership of your computer. Choose the appropriate option:

UW-owned computers


The UW Sophos license allows UW students, faculty, and staff to download the UW’s Sophos software on University-owned computers, servers, and workstations. The software can be installed on unlimited UW-owned computers at no cost.

Your personal computer or device

UW students, faculty, and staff can get Sophos Home Premium for free on their personal computers and devices. To get Sophos Home Premium, enter your UW email address on the page linked below. You will receive an email with a coupon code and a link to register for your license and download Sophos Home Premium. You can also download basic Sophos Home instead.

Departmental IT

Sophos Central, a web-based Enterprise Console, is available to UW departmental IT and system administrators to install and manage Sophos Endpoint Protection suite on their departmental computers.

License Details

The UW Sophos license grants faculty and staff at UW the rights to use the software on UW owned computers, servers, and workstations.

  • There is no charge for the software.
  • UW-IT administers this site license.

Sophos Home Premium (or “Sophos Home Commercial Use Edition”) is provided courtesy of Sophos to students, faculty, and staff. With an affiliated UW email address, users can get Sophos Home Premium at no cost for their personal computers and devices. This offer may end at any time and without warning. If that happens, please switch to the basic version of Sophos Home. UW employees or students interested in participating in this offer should go to Sophos Home Download Page, agree to the terms, and use their or email address to request a coupon code. Sophos will then send an email to that UW address with a coupon code and instructions on next steps. The UW email address is only required for receiving the coupon code–UW users are then welcome to use any email address they choose for registering their account with Sophos.

The Sophos Home Premium software listed below is for use on your personal computer and should not be installed on the UW-owned equipment. Once you have separated from the UW, you must remove the software from your computer.

Sophos Antivirus for home Windows and Macintosh computers provides the same level of protection as the UW licensed package does. The application can be installed on up to three computers. After free registration, you will get a web portal where you can monitor your devices and act on detected issues when needed. Sophos provides free Linux antivirus software. Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader is Adobe's free reader for PDF files.


The BigFix software is only licensed for University owned and supported computers by Santa Clara University. The software should not be installed on personally-owned computers, student-owned computers or computers no longer supported by the University.

Academic Technology installs BigFix on supported computers that are purchased through the University Purchasing Department. If you need BigFix installed on your University-owned and supported computer, please contact the Technology Help Desk at x5700 to make a request.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is Google's web browser.

Microsoft Internet Explorer / Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft's web browser on Windows 10.

Mozilla Firefox ESR

Mozilla Firefox is Mozilla's web browser. Academic Technology recommends the 'ESR' version of Firefox, which has a longer development cycle than the 'standard' Firefox.


SCU has a site license for student, faculty, and staff access to Qualtrics, a comprehensive online survey tool. To enroll yourself, go to the Qualtrics tile in your MySCU Portal. Follow the prompts to setup up your account. If you already had a free Qualtrics account using your SCU email, say yes to merging the accounts together when prompted during the setup process. Sophas student login


SmartPrint is the Santa Clara University branded student print system. All SCU students are free to use SmartPrint, as well as, Staff and Faculty. Guests of the university may also use SmartPrint after they have created a guest printing account.

Our endpoint protection suite (antivirus) is provided by Sophos, a world leader in virus protection software for businesses and educational institutions. We have purchased licenses to allow all CURRENT faculty, staff and students to protect their campus and home computers. Contractors and alumni are not included in our license.

Academic Technology manages the Sophos settings on University-owned computers. If you need Sophos Central + Intercept X installed on your University-owned computer, please contact the Technology Help Desk at x5700.


We recommend Sophos Home to protect your personally owned computer for all students, faculty and staff. Use your personal email address to download the free edition directly from Sophos. You have full control of the software and can set up your own scheduled scan once you install Sophos Home.

In some cases, we may need to refer the customer to an outside vendor which may result in a 'time and materials' fee to troubleshoot unsupported software. Sophos Student Discount

For University owned computers, supported software is available through a number of avenues. A number of the applications can be downloaded from either the web site, or directly from the application vendor's web site. Some may require a departmental purchase for software that is supported, but not provided.
