List In Jupyter Notebook

IPython kernel of Jupyter notebook is able to display plots of code in input cells. It works seamlessly with matplotlib library. The inline option with the%matplotlib magic function renders the plot out cell even if show function of plot object is not called. The show function causes the figure to be displayed below in cell without out with number. Jupyter’s Notebooks and dashboard are web apps, and Jupyter begins up a local Python server to promote these apps to your web browser, making it genuinely platform-independent and starting the default web browser, which shows the list of all the files.

Examples were run on Ubuntu Linux

Add Virtualenv as Python Kernel

Replace your-venv with your virtualenv name

List In Jupyter Notebook
  • Activate the virtualenv

  • Install jupyter in the virtualenv

  • Add the virtualenv as a jupyter kernel

  • You can now select the created kernel your-env when you start Jupyter

Add Apache Spark Kernel

Prerequisites: Java and a local Spark installation

Use a Jupyter plugin called Apache Toree.

Install the plugin into jupyter (replace Spark path with your installation directory):

Start jupyter with the toree plugin
and you'll be able to link jupyter to
an existing local spark installation

Add Scala Kernel

The following steps are a summarized form of the content on this page

Example: install Scala 2.12.8 kernel with almond version 0.7.0:

  • Download almond and scala libs

(coursier is a scala tool used to install almond)

(replace scala and almond versions if you need to)
