The immense popularity of small SUVs means that every manufacturer competing in this space has to bring its A-game.

To that end, Nissan is hitting the reset button with its fully redesigned 2021 Rogue. Boasting bolder styling and greater emphasis on technology and interior appointments, this overhauled Rogue improves upon its predecessor in almost every way. But can it run toe-to-toe with the best that the class has to offer?

To answer that question, Edmunds’ experts compared the redesigned Rogue against one of their top-ranked small SUVs, the Mazda CX-5. The CX-5 is the perfect benchmark for the Rogue since it’s also a sharply styled crossover SUV with a premium interior.

COMFORT AND REFINEMENT

Pampering passengers is one of the Rogue’s strong suits. Its front seats have soft cushioning and ample support for road trips. The Rogue also has a composed ride quality and offers an available tri-zone climate control system that rear-seat passengers can use to dial in their preferred temperature.

The CX-5′s sportier suspension tuning makes for a ride that is a little firmer than others in this class. The front seats are well shaped, though the rear bench is relatively flat, which may cause some discomfort on a longer drive. The CX-5′s cabin is a little quieter on the highway, but the Rogue does everything else just a bit better.

INTERIOR ACCOMMODATIONS

The Rogue’s controls are an appealing mix of analog and digital. It’s a clean interior design that isn’t overly reliant on physical or virtual buttons. The CX-5′s layout is similarly impressive and looks and feels more upscale than the vehicle price suggests. Another high point for the CX-5 is its wide range of adjustability for the driver’s seat, which enables pilots of just about any size to dial in the perfect position.

Both vehicles have plenty of headroom in both rows. The Rogue has superior legroom measurements on paper, but Edmunds’ experts found it a little easier to fit taller passengers in the back of the CX-5. For hauling stuff, however, the Rogue counters with more available cargo space. Their respective strengths cater to different needs, so we don’t think there’s a clear-cut winner here.

INFOTAINMENT AND DRIVING AIDS

You’ll find new infotainment systems in both SUVs. The Rogue’s interface looks similar to the previous model’s, but a larger touchscreen frees up some virtual real estate and makes the buttons easier to press.

The CX-5 is also equipped with a new system this year that consists of a larger display with a revised interface. The display screen doesn’t have touchscreen functionality; instead, you use a dial-like knob controller to make infotainment inputs. This setup is a little less convenient to operate than a touchscreen, but it can help you keep your eyes on the road while driving and making inputs.

Advanced driver safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane keeping assist, are plentiful on each SUV. The Rogue gains an edge with its available ProPilot Assist system. Among its functions is a feature that keeps the Rogue centered in its lane, even in sweeping highway curves. It isn’t a hands-free driving system, but it definitely reduces some of the driving effort on long trips.

Winner: Rogue

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

Mazda retired its “Zoom-Zoom” tagline long ago, but the automaker is still strongly associated with performance. The CX-5′s standard 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine performs well in this class and helps it accelerate a half-second quicker to 60 mph than the 181-horsepower Rogue. On top of that, Mazda offers an optional turbocharged engine that can generate 250 hp when running on 93 octane gas.

Around turns, the CX-5 feels poised and stable for a small SUV. The Rogue, on the other hand, has a more relaxed demeanor. Although it feels more athletic than the previous-generation model, the new Rogue is more at home on urban streets or the highway than serpentine mountain roads.

Winner: CX-5

VALUE PROPOSITION

Both SUVs start around $26,000 and remain competitive as you climb their respective trim ladders. A fully loaded Rogue will have a few unique features, such as quilted leather seats and wireless functionality for Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. A top-tier CX-5 counters with its strong turbocharged engine, near-luxury cabin materials and tight build quality.

Winner: CX-5

EDMUNDS SAYS: The redesigned 2021 Nissan Rogue is vastly improved and holds appeal beyond its promise of a lot of features for the money. It also has more cargo space and a more comfortable ride than the CX-5. However, the CX-5 isn’t far behind and offers a superior driving experience and more passenger room. Ultimately, Edmunds gives the nod to the 2021 Mazda CX-5.

Small luxury SUVs have traditionally offered an appealing mix of practicality, refinement and upscale features. Now they’re also offering something else: high performance.

Many luxury automakers have recently introduced new performance-focused versions of their small SUVs that can rival top-end sport sedans for power and thrills.

Edmunds’ experts tested the recent crop of luxury SUVs to find five examples that best mix everyday usability and performance. They also factored in value in the name of getting the most SUV for your money. All prices below include the destination charge.

2020 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one SUV that’s big on personality. The Stelvio is defined by lively handling and arresting looks, but it also provides a comfortable ride. A 280-horsepower four-cylinder engine is standard, but you can also go for the top performance version called the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It features a Ferrari-developed turbocharged V6 engine that cranks out 505 horsepower.

There are some drawbacks to the Stelvio. There is not much cargo space, and despite recent updates to the infotainment system, it has more tech glitches than a luxury vehicle should. Still, the Stelvio is an SUV with soul in abundance. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $42,695.

2021 AUDI Q5

Maybe you’re looking for something a little more buttoned-up. If so, the Audi Q5 is a great option. We’re especially fond of its high-quality interior and standard all-wheel drive. For 2021, the Q5 has a base four-cylinder engine that makes 261 horsepower. The top performance model is the SQ5, which uses a 349-horsepower V6. This isn’t as much power as the other SUVs listed here, but it’s still plenty for most drivers.

Audi has also updated the Q5′s styling for 2021, and the new look certainly injects the Q5 with more flair. But at its heart, this remains a luxury SUV that puts practicality ahead of flash. If excellent ergonomics and road manners top your list, the Q5 certainly deserves consideration. Starting price: $44,295 (Edmunds estimate)

2020 BMW X3

BMW’s X3 checks all the boxes you’d expect from a BMW, from thoughtful interior design to sharp handling that delivers an enhanced sense of control behind the wheel. A 248-horsepower four-cylinder and a 382-horsepower six-cylinder serve as the X3′s main engine options, but there’s also an all-new 2020 X3 M. This top-of-the-line performance model pumps out up to 503 horsepower from its turbocharged six-cylinder engine and is predictably riotous on back roads.

You’ll find the X3 enjoyable to drive even if you stick with a more mild-mannered version. The X3 can also haul an impressive amount of stuff thanks to generous cargo space and rear seats that fold down completely flat. You get a lot of technology with the X3, though its infotainment system and some of the advanced safety features are a little disappointing in their operation. Starting MSRP: $42,945.

From the moment you look at it, the Mercedes-Benz GLC exudes elegance. It has striking exterior design and a refined interior, and it expertly balances comfort and performance on the road. A 255-horsepower four-cylinder and a 385-horsepower six-cylinder engine are on tap, or you can go for the AMG GLC 63, which puts a 469-horsepower turbocharged V8 at your disposal.

The GLC’s infotainment system, which is easy to use and feature-packed, complements the high-quality interior. We also like the GLC’s roomy rear seating and smartly shaped cargo area. Mercedes offers a wealth of upgrades and options, so beware the final price tag. Starting MSRP: $43,495.

2020 TESLA MODEL Y

The newest vehicle from Tesla, the Model Y, is a fully electric SUV packed with star power and clever features. Audi and Jaguar currently offer impressive electric SUVs of their own, and other automakers are close behind. What sets the Model Y apart are performance, value and access to Tesla’s vast network of proprietary Supercharger stations.

The Model Y comes in two versions: the Long Range and the Performance. You get 316 miles of range from the Long Range on a full battery. The Performance has nearly the same range but quickens the SUV’s pace considerably. In Edmunds’ testing, it blasted from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, which is equivalent to the acceleration of the BMW X3 M and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63. In any variation, the Model Y is a game-changer. Starting MSRP: $51,990.

EDMUNDS SAYS: Just about any luxury SUV offers an appealing mix of practicality and style. But only a handful of these models are also enjoyable to drive whether you’re driving a base or a high-performance version.
